Eid al-Fitr, celebrated properly away from home.

Eid abroad is a booking problem with a moon at the centre of it. You cannot fix the date until a day or two before, and everything you want on that day has to be reserved weeks earlier. That contradiction is the whole job.

The date you cannot fix, and how to book around it

Eid al-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, which begins when the new moon is sighted. In practice that means the day is confirmed only on the evening before, and it may differ by a day between Thailand and your own country, since Thailand makes its own announcement through the Office of the Chularatchamontri and the Central Islamic Council of Thailand. A family following the announcement at home may therefore celebrate on a different day from the mosque down the road, which is a matter for the family and its own authority and not for us to comment on.

The operational answer is simple and slightly wasteful: hold both nights. We reserve the private dining room, the car, the tailoring collection and the photographer, if there is one, on two consecutive dates, with a cancellation window agreed in writing that runs to the morning of the first. Good hotels understand this arrangement and will not charge for it if it is set up honestly at the outset. What no hotel will do is find you a room for twenty at four hours' notice on the day, which is what happens when a family waits for certainty before booking.

Eid prayer

Eid prayer is in the morning, shortly after sunrise, and the congregations are the largest of the year. In Bangkok the institutional mosques, including the Foundation of the Islamic Centre of Thailand at Ramkhamhaeng, draw very large numbers, and the practical advice is the same as it would be at home: leave early, expect the parking to be full, and agree a meeting point for the family before anyone gets out of the car. Haroon Mosque in Bang Rak is smaller and closer for families on the river. In Phuket the west coast village mosques hold their own gatherings and some prayers are held in open ground, which is the pleasanter option with children.

Timing on the day is tight, because Eid prayer follows sunrise and the roads fill quickly. We normally have the car at the door forty five minutes before the family thinks it needs to be, and we send a second vehicle for anyone who will want to leave early. Where the family prefers not to attend a large public congregation, prayer arrangements at the residence are a matter for the family to settle with its own scholar. Our part is the room, the mats, the qibla and the quiet.

Clothes, which take longer than anyone allows for

New clothes for Eid are a small logistics operation in their own right, and abroad they are worse, because the tailor is not the family's tailor. Bangkok's tailoring is quick and generally good, and the shops around the Nana area and Sukhumvit Soi 3/1 are used to Gulf customers and to thobes and abayas rather than to suits alone. Allow ten days rather than three, insist on a fitting, and put the collection date on both possible Eid days.

The dull part matters more. Hotel valet services are busy at the end of Ramadan and a thobe that needs pressing on the morning of Eid will not get pressed on the morning of Eid. We send everything down two days ahead with the return date written on the docket, and we check that the hotel has the right equipment for delicate fabrics rather than assuming. Perfume, oud and bakhoor are easily found: the merchants along Sukhumvit Soi 3/1 have sold agarwood and oud to Gulf families for decades and know exactly what is being asked for.

The family meal, and hosting others

Eid lunch or dinner in a Thai hotel is straightforward once the room is held. The brief is much the same as the iftar brief: a private room with a door, halal sourcing verified for that specific kitchen with the Central Islamic Council of Thailand rather than assumed across the property, no alcohol on the table or the menu, a prayer space nearby, and a manager present. What differs is the mood. This is a celebration, so the kitchen should show its range, the room should be dressed, and the timing can relax.

Many of the families we look after host other families on Eid, which turns twelve covers into forty and moves the event from a dining room to a small ballroom or a garden. Give the hotel a fortnight for that, provide the guest list early so that place cards are correct, and settle the seating question, whether the party sits together or the men and women in adjoining rooms, at the point of booking rather than on the day. Thai banqueting teams execute either arrangement without a raised eyebrow provided they are told in time to set two rooms rather than one.

Eidi, gifts and the shopping

Eidi is easier to arrange in Thailand than families expect, but it needs a day's notice. Crisp notes come from a bank rather than a hotel cashier, and a bank will supply them in sequence and in the denominations asked for if the request is made in advance through the hotel or the office. Baht is the obvious currency for children who are enjoying the country; some families prefer to give in their home currency and hand it over on return. Envelopes are easily found in the stationery departments of the large malls.

For gifts, the department stores at Siam Paragon, ICONSIAM, Central Embassy, EmQuartier and CentralWorld cover everything from watches to children's toys, King Power handles duty free before departure, and the gold shops of Yaowarat are a genuine Bangkok institution for anyone who prefers to give gold. Thai silk, ceramics and craft make good gifts to carry home for those who stayed behind. Prices and paperwork for high value purchases should be documented properly, with receipts kept for customs on the way home, and any VAT refund claimed at the airport rather than assumed.

Briefing a Thai hotel that has never hosted an Eid

Thai hotels know Songkran, Chinese New Year and Christmas intimately. Many have hosted Eid parties for years, particularly in Phuket and along the Sukhumvit corridor, and some have not hosted one at all. The way to tell is to ask directly what they did last year and for whom, and to listen for specifics. A property that answers with a description of the room it used, the timing it ran and the caterer it worked with is a property that has done it. A property that answers with enthusiasm alone is a property that will improvise on the day.

The brief that closes the gap is short: the date may move by one day and both are held; the morning begins early with prayer, so breakfast and cars come before dawn; the meal is alcohol free including in the kitchen's cooking; a prayer space is needed near the room; children will be present in numbers; and the hotel should not schedule music in the adjoining spaces without asking first. Every item on that list has cost a family a good morning somewhere, which is why it is written down and countersigned rather than mentioned in passing at check in.

The date of Eid al-Fitr depends on the sighting of the moon and is announced locally, so the Thai date may differ by a day from the one declared in your own country. Confirm with your own mosque or Islamic authority at home and with the Office of the Chularatchamontri and the Central Islamic Council of Thailand (halal.or.th), hold bookings on both possible days, and verify halal certification for the specific kitchen catering your meal rather than for the hotel as a whole.

This briefing is general information, not legal, tax or investment advice. Thai rules change frequently and individual cases differ. Verify current requirements with the relevant authorities, including the Immigration Bureau, the Board of Investment, the Land Department, the Department of Business Development and the Revenue Department, and take advice on your own facts before acting.
