Verify your own position, individually

Thailand's visa exemption for tourism applies to nationals of a defined list of countries, and an Iraqi passport holder should not assume it applies to them. More than that, the position can vary by individual circumstance, by passport type and by purpose of travel, which is why the only correct instruction is to verify your own case rather than to rely on what a relative or a neighbour experienced. Contact the Royal Thai Embassy accredited to Iraq, or the mission handling visa applications for your area, and ask directly about your passport, your purpose and your intended dates.

Ask a specific list of questions and keep the answers. Which visa category applies to a tourist visit, and which to a medical visit, since these are not always the same. What supporting documents are required, and does a medical visit need a letter from the hospital in Thailand. What is the current processing time, and is an appointment needed. Is the application filed online or in person, and where. How long is the permitted stay, and what is the position on extending it. Does anyone else in the party, a spouse on a different passport, a child, an accompanying relative, need a separate application. Get this in writing where the mission will provide it, and begin the process months rather than weeks ahead.

Separately and regardless of visa outcome, the Thailand Digital Arrival Card is mandatory for foreign nationals and must be filed online within seventy-two hours before arrival at tdac.immigration.go.th; airlines increasingly check it at the gate. And if the itinerary connects through another country, confirm that country's transit requirements for your passport with the airline and the relevant embassy before ticketing, particularly where the connection involves an overnight or leaving the airside area.

Medical travel, the common purpose

Most Iraqi enquiries that reach this desk have a medical component. The Bangkok private hospital sector is built for international patients: Bumrungrad International treats over 1.1 million patients a year, more than 520,000 of them international from over 190 countries, was the first hospital in Asia to earn JCI accreditation in 2002, provides medical interpreters in more than twenty-five languages including Arabic at no cost to the patient, and has halal food available on site. Bangkok Hospital and Samitivej are the other principal private hospitals for international patients, with BNH near Sala Daeng. We describe logistics and standards only. The right first step is direct contact with the hospital's own international office rather than with an intermediary. Ask them what records they need in advance, whether they will provide a letter confirming the appointment for a visa application, what the estimated cost of the assessment is, how payment is made and in what currency, whether an interpreter can be assigned, and what accompanying family arrangements they support. Send translated medical records ahead so the first consultation is not spent rebuilding a history from memory. Where treatment might be funded under a government sponsored patient programme, procedures differ and change, so confirm the current position with your own health authority and your embassy rather than with any agent who offers to arrange it.

Documentation, and the patience it requires

The families who have the smoothest trips are the ones who over prepare on paper. Assemble the full set before departure: passports with sufficient validity for every traveller, the visa where one is required, the hospital appointment letter, translated medical records and imaging, proof of accommodation, the return itinerary, evidence of funds for the stay in the form the embassy specifies, birth certificates or family documents where children are travelling with one parent, and a written authorisation where a child travels without both parents. Carry the originals and a full set of copies, and keep a scanned set accessible online in case a bag goes missing.

• Passports valid well beyond the intended stay, for every member of the party
• The visa or the embassy's written confirmation of the position for your passport
• Hospital appointment letter and the international office contact, where the trip is medical
• Medical records and imaging, translated, sent to the hospital in advance
• Confirmed accommodation and return itinerary
• Evidence of funds in the format the embassy specifies
• Documents for accompanying children, including authorisation where one parent travels alone
• A complete copy set, physical and scanned

Patience is the other requirement, and it is worth saying plainly rather than dressing up. Processes can take longer than they do for a traveller on a different passport, questions can be asked that are not asked of others, and a refusal at one stage does not always come with an explanation. None of that is a reflection on the family. The practical response is the same every time: apply early, answer exactly what is asked, provide complete and consistent documentation, keep every receipt and letter, remain courteous with officials at every counter, and use a qualified professional where the case is complex. Nothing else improves the odds, and no shortcut is worth the risk.

Lawful banking channels, and only those

Some Iraqi families encounter friction when arranging international payments, and the guidance we give is short, lawful and does not vary. Use regulated, compliant financial institutions and no other channel. Keep complete documentation for the source and the purpose of every payment, including hospital invoices, accommodation contracts and receipts. Expect that a bank may ask questions about a transfer and answer them fully and promptly. Allow substantially more time than a domestic payment would take, so that a hospital deposit is not sitting unpaid the week before an appointment. And take advice from a qualified professional, a lawyer or a licensed adviser in your own jurisdiction, on any transaction of size.

Any party that offers to help you around a banking difficulty is offering you a much larger problem in place of a smaller one. Where a payment genuinely cannot be made through a compliant channel, the answer is professional advice, not a workaround, and a legitimate hospital or villa will always accept a properly documented bank transfer arriving late in preference to anything irregular arriving on time.

On the ground

For a medical stay, base in the Sukhumvit Soi 3 to Ploenchit corridor. Bumrungrad sits on Soi 3, and the corridor puts Soi Arab at Sukhumvit 3/1, where Iraqi and Levantine kitchens have operated for decades, inside a short walk, along with money changers, pharmacies, grocers and two Skytrain stations. Once treatment runs past a fortnight, move from a hotel room to a serviced apartment in the same few streets: the kitchen, the washing machine and the second bedroom change the experience of a long stay entirely and the nightly cost falls. Halal certification is granted per establishment by the Central Islamic Council of Thailand rather than per chain, so look for the CICOT mark and verify per outlet at halal.or.th. For prayer, Haroon Mosque in Bang Rak is the established Bangkok choice for visitors and Suvarnabhumi has prayer rooms for travel days.
