Phuket's west coast: villas for a Gulf summer.

The twenty kilometres that matter

Phuket is a large island with one luxury coastline. Running north from Patong, the beaches are Kamala, then Surin, then Bangtao with the Laguna estate behind it, then Layan and the quieter north. This band holds nearly all of the island's serious hotels and the great majority of its large private villas, and the drive from Phuket International Airport to the northern end of it is twenty-five to forty minutes, to Kamala closer to an hour in traffic. Everything east and south of that band is a different island: the old town, the marinas, the busier beaches, the tourist strip at Patong that most of our clients pass through only on the way somewhere else.

Within the band the character shifts. Kamala is a quiet bay with a village behind it and a hillside above holding some of the island's largest houses. Surin is small, expensive and discreet, with the villas set into the headlands at either end. Bangtao is the long beach, and behind it the Laguna estate is a self-contained set of resorts, villas, a golf course and lagoons, which suits families who want a house but also want facilities within a shuttle ride. Layan and the north are the emptiest, best for families whose priority is that nothing at all happens outside the wall.

The names worth knowing

Three properties anchor the coast and are worth naming because they set the reference standard. Amanpuri occupies its own peninsula near Surin and offers pavilions and a set of private villas with staff, and it is the quietest of the three by design. Trisara sits in a private bay north of Bangtao with pool suites and villas stepped down a hillside to the water. Banyan Tree sits inside the Laguna estate at Bangtao, with pool villas and the widest family facilities of the three. All three will handle a large Gulf family well, all three understand alcohol-free service, prayer requirements and female spa staff without being lectured, and all three should be briefed in writing in advance regardless.

Beyond the branded properties sits the private villa market, which is where most of our summer families actually stay. These are individually owned houses, four to ten bedrooms, let through estate management companies, typically with a resident or daily staff team. The good ones are excellent and better value than an equivalent number of hotel suites. What staffed means in practice

A staffed villa in Phuket usually comes with a villa manager, housekeeping, a chef or cook, a gardener and a pool technician, and often a driver with a vehicle either included or available. What varies is whether they live on site, what hours they keep, and how much of the service is included in the nightly rate as against charged on consumption. Groceries are almost always billed at cost plus a small handling fee, which is fair and worth confirming. For a family of fifteen over eight weeks the shopping bill is substantial, and it is better understood at booking than discovered in week three.

• The staff roster: roles, numbers, whether resident, and the daily hours each works
• Whether an outside or family cook may use the kitchen, and whether the house chef is then stood down
• Grocery arrangements, the handling margin, and who holds the household account
• Laundry: in-house machines and capacity, or an outside service, and the turnaround
• Vehicles: how many, what size, whether drivers are included and their hours
• Whether the house will be cleared of alcohol and pork before arrival
• Female housekeeping staff where the family requires it
• Generator or backup power, which matters more in the rainy months than families expect

Halal kitchens, honestly

Phuket is better placed for this than most of Thailand. The island has a substantial local Muslim population and mosques across it, halal butchers and suppliers operate on the island, and villa managers on the west coast are used to sourcing for Gulf households. What does not exist is a guarantee. Halal certification in Thailand is granted per establishment by the Central Islamic Council of Thailand, not per chain and not per district, so a restaurant, a supplier or a hotel outlet must be checked individually and the certificate mark looked for at the premises.

The workable arrangements are three. Families with a travelling cook simply need a clean kitchen, a supply line and, where they wish, a full clear-out of the kitchen before arrival. Families using the villa's chef should have the chef briefed in writing on what may and may not enter the house, and should confirm where the meat is bought. Families staying at one of the branded resorts should give the kitchen a written brief a week ahead rather than raising it at breakfast; at that level the request is routine and the notice is what makes it work smoothly.

Beach access and what privacy means on sand

This needs saying plainly because listings blur it. Beaches in Thailand are public land. A villa or resort described as having private beach access has a private path, its own loungers and usually a staffed point where the property meets the sand, but it does not own the beach and cannot exclude people from it. For families where the women do not swim in public, the pool is the answer and the beach is a place for early mornings, walks and children. The summer weather, without varnish

June to August is the southwest monsoon on the Andaman coast, and Phuket's west-facing beaches take it directly. Expect heavy rain that usually arrives in bursts and clears rather than settling for days, humid heat between the bursts, and a sea that is genuinely unsafe at times. Rip currents on this coast during these months cause deaths every year, red flags are posted for a reason, and families with children should treat the flag as an instruction rather than a suggestion. The compensations are real: the island is quieter, the villas are at their lowest rates of the year, the landscape is green, and a house with a good pool and covered terraces carries the days easily.

Villa quality, staffing and neighbouring construction change season to season, and halal certification is granted per establishment rather than per chain. Verify halal suppliers and outlets with the Central Islamic Council of Thailand at halal.or.th, confirm staffing and access terms in writing with the villa management company before paying a deposit, and check current sea conditions and beach flag warnings with the local authorities and your villa manager on the day.
