The only conversion worth doing
Wealthy Indian families do not experience prices as currency; they experience them as comparisons. A suite is expensive or reasonable relative to the Oberoi or the Taj at home, relative to Dubai last winter, relative to London in June. So this briefing benchmarks the way our clients actually think: in lakh and crore, against the alternatives they already know. One caution before the numbers: bands below are planning figures current to this writing, not quotes. Thai pricing moves with season, and the December to February peak carries genuine premiums. Where precision matters, we confirm live rates with the venue; you should too.
Hotels and suites
Bangkok's luxury hotel bench is one of the deepest in the world, and competition does the guest's negotiating. Entry-level rooms at genuinely five-star properties commonly sit around INR 15,000 to 30,000 a night, the level a good Mumbai five-star charges for the same room. Suites are where the anomaly shows: expansive one-bedroom suites at the city's great hotels, the riverside grandes dames and the downtown flagships, typically run INR 60,000 to 1.5 lakh a night, against INR 2 lakh and up for equivalent keys in Dubai or London. Speciality suites and the famous names go higher, but the ceiling arrives later than anywhere comparable. On the islands, resort villas with private pools at properties of the Amanpuri and Trisara tier run from roughly INR 1 lakh to several lakh a night at peak, which is serious money and still below what the same brands command in the Maldives an hour further on.
Villas and the staffed house
The staffed private villa is where Thailand pulls decisively ahead of India itself, because the product barely exists at home. A well-run four to six bedroom villa on Phuket's west coast, with housekeeping, villa manager and often a private chef included, typically prices between INR 1 and 4 lakh a night in high season, less in green season by 30 to 40 percent. The trophy tier, estate villas with cinema rooms, gyms, ten staff and headland views, runs from several lakh to INR 10 lakh plus a night and books out for Christmas by September. Against Dubai or the Cote d'Azur the same house is a third to a half the money; against a comparable rental in Alibaug or Goa, the Thai villa is often cheaper and the service depth is not a fair fight. Samui runs somewhat below Phuket for equivalent stock, Hua Hin below both.
Staff, cars and the running of a household
Household economics are the quiet revelation. A full-time private driver with a good car runs roughly INR 50,000 to 90,000 a month; an excellent private chef, INR 80,000 to 2 lakh; housekeeping, a fraction of Gulf rates with none of the sponsorship apparatus. Daily boat charter in Phuket for a family runs from about INR 60,000 for a speedboat day to several lakh for a proper motor yacht. Spa and wellness pricing is perhaps the single largest gap against every comparison city: ninety minutes of genuinely skilled massage at a five-star spa for INR 6,000 to 12,000, and a fraction of that outside hotel walls. The compounding effect across a season is what changes family behaviour: things that are occasional treats in London, daily massages, private boats, a chef for every meal, become simply how the stay runs.
| What you are buying | Thailand, typical band in INR | Rough comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Five-star suite, Bangkok, per night | 60,000 to 1.5 lakh | Half or less of Dubai or London equivalents |
| Staffed 4 to 6BR villa, Phuket peak, per night | 1 to 4 lakh | A third to half of Dubai or Riviera stock |
| Private chef, per month | 80,000 to 2 lakh | Well below Gulf rates, staff included culture |
| Full-time driver and car, per month | 50,000 to 90,000 | A quarter of Singapore or London |
| Tasting menu, celebrated Bangkok room, per head | 8,000 to 35,000 | Below every peer dining capital |
| Five-star spa, 90 minutes | 6,000 to 12,000 | A fraction of any comparison city |
Dining out, meal by meal
Dining is where the quality-per-rupee curve is most visible because a family samples every tier in a single week. At the top, Bangkok's celebrated tasting rooms run roughly INR 8,000 to 35,000 a head before wine, against INR 25,000 to 60,000 for equivalent rooms in Dubai or Singapore. The tier below is the sweet spot: excellent Thai, Japanese, Indian and European rooms where dinner for four with a bottle lands between INR 15,000 and 40,000 total, a bill that would look like a starter course in London. And the street tier is the miracle: some of the finest plates in Asia, the boat noodles, the khao soi, the grilled seafood, at INR 200 to 800 a person, which keeps every restaurant above it honest. Indian food specifically spans the same range, from Phahurat thali shops to the Rang Mahal and Indus tier to Gaggan's lineage at the top. A family that eats seriously will spend freely here and still spend less than at home in Mumbai's top rooms, which is a sentence we can write about almost nowhere else.
Weddings and events: the big-ticket test
The largest single test of the arithmetic is the destination wedding, and it is the reason many families first run these numbers. As a planning band, full multi-day Indian weddings at Thailand's beach resorts and Bangkok ballroom hotels tend to close meaningfully below equivalent Dubai events and dramatically below European ones, with per-guest all-in costs commonly running 30 to 50 percent under Dubai for comparable production values, and the venue depth to absorb five hundred guests without the event feeling processed. The savings do not come from thinner service; they come from the underlying cost base, the same force at work in every table above. Our weddings desk prices these properly against live venue quotes; the point here is only that the value thesis holds at the scale of a crore just as it does at the scale of a massage.
Where Thailand is not cheap
Honesty requires the other column. Wine is the famous one: Thai taxation makes imported bottles two to three times retail, so a serious cellar evening costs London money and the workaround is drinking less ambitiously or accepting the premium. Imported goods generally, cars above all, carry heavy duties; nobody ships a lifestyle of imported labels here to save money. The trophy villa tier at Christmas and New Year prices with global peak weeks and negotiates with nobody. International schools, while cheaper than Singapore, are not cheap in absolute terms. And the very top Bangkok tasting counters now price within sight of Singapore, having discovered what the world will pay. None of this changes the overall arithmetic, but families who arrive expecting everything to cost a third of home find the exceptions quickly, usually on the wine list.
Every figure here is a planning band, not a quote; rates move with season and currency. Confirm live pricing with the venue or with us before budgeting, and remember that remittances for a season abroad run under the LRS through banking channels, with any tax questions belonging to your CA.
What this means for a season
Put together, a full winter season for a multigenerational family, a staffed villa, cars, a chef, dining out well, boats, spa, guests flowing through, typically closes between a third and a half of its Dubai equivalent and a quarter of its London one, at a standard of daily service that neither city matches at any price. That is the honest core of the Thai proposition to Indian wealth: not that it is cheap, but that quality per rupee at the top end is the best in any serious destination we know. Our role is making sure clients capture that arithmetic rather than the tourist version of it, through the right villa, the right staff and rates negotiated as residents rather than visitors.
