The decision that fixes everything else

School determines your neighbourhood, your commute, your budget and, in several visa routes, your legal basis for being in the country. It also determines the social world your family joins, because in both Phuket and Bangkok the school gate is where adult friendships actually form. Families who arrive, rent somewhere pleasant, and then look for a school within reach almost always move within eighteen months. Start with a shortlist of schools, visit them, secure a place, and then draw a circle around the school and rent inside it.

The second thing to settle early is honesty about the time horizon. A family planning two years and a return needs a different school and a very different language plan from a family planning to see a child through to university abroad. Neither is wrong. But a two year family that enrols as though it were a ten year family, and lets the Russian slide accordingly, creates a genuinely difficult reentry, and we have watched it happen more than once.

What is on offer

Thailand's international school sector is deep by regional standards and is regulated by the Thai Ministry of Education, with the better schools additionally accredited by international bodies and inspected on a cycle. The main curricula available are the English National Curriculum leading to IGCSE and A Levels, the International Baccalaureate through to the Diploma Programme, American curricula leading to a high school diploma and Advanced Placement, and a range of hybrid or smaller programmes. Bilingual Thai schools and Thai private schools sit below the international tier at much lower fees, and a small number of families use them, though they are a difficult fit for a child arriving without Thai.

The practical distinctions that matter to a Russian speaking family are these. IB schools tend to handle multilingual children thoughtfully and several offer the first language as a subject at Diploma level, which is a real asset for maintaining literate Russian. British curriculum schools are more structured and more familiar in shape to families used to a defined syllabus and terminal examinations. American curriculum schools offer the broadest extracurricular provision and the smoothest route to United States universities. All of the serious schools run English as an additional language support, and the quality of that support, not the badge on the gate, is what determines how a non English speaking eight year old actually experiences the first year.

Phuket

Phuket has a small but genuinely established set of schools, which is one of the reasons the family community settled here rather than somewhere prettier. British International School Phuket is the long established full service option with boarding, running the British curriculum and the IB Diploma. UWC Thailand in Thalang runs an IB programme with a distinctive ethos and draws a very international parent body. Kajonkiet International School and HeadStart International School serve large numbers of resident families across the island, and there are further smaller and more flexible providers, including schools oriented to home schooling support and distance programmes, which suit families on shorter horizons.

The island's constraint is choice rather than quality. If your child needs a specific specialism, an unusual language, a particular learning support provision or a very small class setting, you may not find it, and the answer will sometimes be Bangkok. Geography also matters more than parents expect: the schools sit in the middle and north of the island while much of the family housing sits in the south, and a Rawai to Thalang run in high season traffic is a real commitment twice a day. Check the bus routes before you sign a lease.

Bangkok

Bangkok has many times Phuket's provision. The long established names include Bangkok Patana, New International School of Thailand, International School Bangkok, Shrewsbury International School, Harrow International School and Regents, and behind them sit dozens more across every curriculum and price point. Whatever a child needs, from a specialist learning support department to a serious music or sports programme to a particular examination board, Bangkok has it somewhere. The trade is the city: fees run higher at the top end, admission to the most sought after schools is competitive, and the commute is a genuine factor in choosing where to live, which is why families cluster in the Sukhumvit corridor near the eastern schools or in the northern suburbs near the ones out there.

Russian language provision

There is no large Russian medium school system in Thailand. What exists is a layer of supplementary provision, strongest in Phuket where the community is largest: Saturday or after school classes in Russian language, literature, mathematics and sometimes history, private tutoring, small group teaching organised by parents, and support for children enrolled remotely with schools in their home country. Bangkok's provision is thinner and more informal and often comes down to a tutor found through the community rather than an institution. Provision of this kind is small scale and it changes; verify directly with the provider, and where a family needs formal recognition of study, verify the position with the relevant education authority or with your embassy rather than relying on an intermediary's assurance.

Distance and external enrolment is the other route, and a significant number of families use it. A child attends an international school in Thailand during the week and remains formally enrolled with a school in the home country, completing assessments remotely and sitting examinations as required. It works, it is a real workload for the child, and it preserves optionality. Families considering it should confirm the current requirements with the school concerned and with the relevant authority directly, because the arrangements differ between countries and change.

Keeping the first language

This is the part parents underestimate. A child placed in an English medium school at seven will be fluent in English within eighteen months, and unless something is done deliberately, Russian will become the language they understand perfectly and answer in English. Reading and writing go first, because they are the parts nobody practises accidentally. The families whose children keep genuinely literate Russian are not the ones who simply speak it at home; they are the ones who treat it as a subject.

• One language at home, held consistently, including in front of English speaking friends.
• Reading in Russian as a fixed daily habit rather than an occasional one, with books chosen for pleasure and appropriate to the child's actual age rather than their reading level in the language.
• Formal instruction in reading and writing, weekly, from a tutor or a supplementary class, from the year the child starts school and not later.
• Contact that requires the language: calls with grandparents, summers with relatives, cousins, camps.
• For older children, an examination or qualification to aim at, whether the IB first language option, an external certificate or a distance programme, because a target does what exhortation does not.

Admissions, fees and the calendar

Most international schools in Thailand run an August to June academic year, though a minority follow other calendars. Applications for August entry typically open the preceding autumn and the sought after year groups fill early. Expect an application form, previous school reports, an assessment in English and mathematics, sometimes an interview with the child and the parents, and evidence of immunisation. Fees vary by an order of magnitude between the top Bangkok schools and smaller Phuket providers, and the headline tuition is never the whole figure. Budget separately for the application and assessment fee, a refundable or non refundable capital or development fee, uniform, bus, lunch, trips, examination entries and any learning support. Ask for the full fee schedule in writing before you commit; a good school provides it without being pressed.

School provision, fees, accreditation and admission requirements change every year, and supplementary language classes in particular come and go. Verify directly with the school, check international school registration and accreditation with the Thai Ministry of Education, and confirm any question of home country educational recognition with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bangkok or the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Bangkok as applicable.
