Where legacy members stand
The programme's position on legacy Elite memberships has been consistent: contracts are honoured for their full original term. An Elite Easy Access member with years remaining keeps the five-year visa privileges purchased; longer legacy products run to their stated end. Renewals and points-based services follow the current programme's rules, but nobody's existing membership has been shortened or repriced. Legacy members therefore face a choice rather than a problem: run the old membership out, or convert it into a current tier while promotional pricing lasts.

The tiers differ in term, points allowances and service depth rather than in the underlying legal status: all are renewable long-stay memberships with airport handling and concierge service attached, none carries work rights, and none confers a special tax status. The 2026 upgrade promotions
Through 2026 the programme has been running early-bird upgrade promotions aimed at legacy members. Under the published promotional rates, holders of the legacy Elite Easy Access and Elite Family Excursion products have been offered upgrades to Platinum for ฿400,000 or to Diamond for ฿1,000,000, in each case moving to the current tier's full term and service package. Set against headline pricing of ฿1.5M and ฿2.5M respectively, the arithmetic is the draw: the upgrade prices a ten or fifteen year membership well below what a new applicant pays.
Promotional windows, eligibility and terms are set by Thailand Privilege and have changed with little notice through the programme's history. How an upgrade actually works
Mechanically, an upgrade is a fresh enrolment at the promotional price rather than an amendment to the old contract. The member applies through the programme or an authorised agent, passes the standard background screening again, pays the promotional fee, and receives the new tier's membership with its full term running from issuance, together with the current visa affixed at the next convenient entry or at an immigration appointment. Points allowances and service entitlements follow the new tier from day one. Two details are worth confirming in writing before paying: how the remaining value of the legacy term is treated, and when the old membership formally ends, so that no gap in visa status opens between the two. Processing has typically run a few weeks to a couple of months, so members should not time an upgrade against an imminent expiry.
Whether upgrading makes sense
The case for upgrading is horizon. If Thailand is a ten-year-plus commitment, converting a membership with two or three years left into a decade or more at promotional pricing is usually better value than letting it expire and buying again at full rate, particularly with the cheapest entry tier closing to new applicants after 30 September 2026. Upgraders also move onto the current service platform, which matters to members who actually use the airport and concierge services rather than treating the card as a visa alone.
The case against is equally practical. A member with most of a legacy term still to run is paying now for years far in the future. A member who may qualify for the LTR, with its ten-year term, ฿50k fee, tax treatment under RD 743 for wealth categories and annual-only reporting, may find Privilege the wrong instrument entirely, a comparison our LTR briefing draws in detail. And a member whose Thai future is genuinely uncertain should not buy duration they may not use: the memberships are not refundable instruments.
- Upgrade: long horizon, active use of services, promotional pricing beats future full-rate renewal.
- Wait: substantial legacy term remaining and no pressing need for the longer tiers.
- Look elsewhere: LTR eligibility, or genuine uncertainty about the Thai commitment.
