The tiers, honestly

The 24-hour-suit shops that built the city's fame serve tourists and should be left to them: fused construction, house cloth of mystery provenance, and a fit achieved by optimism. Above them sits the serious middle: established houses, often two or three generations old, doing genuine made-to-measure with canvassed construction and imported cloth at ฿25,000 to 60,000 a suit. At the top, a handful of true bespoke operations cut individual paper patterns with multiple fittings at ฿60,000 to 150,000 and up by cloth: a fraction of Savile Row or Milan for work that, at its best, stands the comparison. The city's establishment, Thai and foreign, dresses in these last two tiers, quietly.

What to insist on

• Construction: full or half canvas, stated plainly; walk out of any room where the answer to that question is vague.
• Cloth: books from the real mills, Loro Piana, Zegna, Holland & Sherry, Dormeuil, VBC, with tropical weights, 220 to 260 grams, taking precedence in this climate over romance about flannel.
• Fittings: a proper make means a basted fitting and at least one forward fitting; a house proposing one visit and delivery is describing alterations, not tailoring.
• Time: two to five weeks for the serious middle, six-plus for true bespoke first commissions. The calendar is the honesty test of the entire market.
• A house style you actually like, read from garments in progress on the rail, not photographs; Bangkok cuts everything from Neapolitan-soft to military-structured, and the right house is the one whose default flatters you.

Shirts, and the rest of the wardrobe

Bangkok shirtmaking is a quiet excellence: made-to-measure in real cottons, Thomas Mason and Albini books, at ฿2,500 to 6,000 a shirt, with the sensible first order being one shirt, worn and washed twice, before the dozen. The trade also serves the wider wardrobe well: trousers and chinos to measure at prices that make ready-to-wear irrational, black tie executed properly by the serious houses (allow real time and a fitting discipline), and women's tailoring, though thinner on the ground, strong at the couture-adjacent ateliers that dress Bangkok society for its gala calendar.

The resident's approach

• Commission one garment first at any new house, however good the reference; a wardrobe is built on a proven pattern, never on a first order.
• Once the pattern is right, the economics turn delightful: remote reorders in new cloth, an annual fitting to true things up, and a travel wardrobe that costs less than one European commission a year.
• Climate-plan the rotation: fresco and high-twist for the city, linen blends for the islands, and one properly structured dark suit because Bangkok's formal occasions are real and air-conditioned.
• The best houses run on introduction and appointment; the difference between walking in and being brought in is measurable in the attention your pattern receives.

Fabric fraud is the tourist tier's oldest trick; at serious houses provenance is provable, selvedge, book and order sheet agreeing. If a price seems to buy Loro Piana for the cost of polyester, it has.
