Children and teenagers: what actually lands.

The children decide whether a long summer is repeated. Here is what genuinely holds their attention for four weeks, and how much independence a teenager can safely be given in Thailand.

Four weeks is not four days

A short holiday can be carried by novelty. A month cannot. The families who take a house in Phuket or Hua Hin from mid June to mid August need something closer to a summer routine than an itinerary, and the ones who get it right build the children's weeks around two or three repeating anchors rather than a parade of outings. A swimming lesson three mornings a week, a Muay Thai session twice, a boat on Fridays. Children settle into a rhythm faster than adults expect and complain far less when they know what tomorrow looks like.

Age bands matter more than the number of children. Under sevens need water, shade, a nap and their own staff, and almost nothing else. Seven to twelve want to do things, and this is the age at which Thailand is at its best. Teenagers want to be left alone, in company, somewhere they can be seen by other teenagers. Those three groups should not share a programme, and the villa arrangement that gives each of them its own space is worth more than any single excursion.

Water, in every form

Water is the whole of a Thai summer for children. The villa pool does most of the work, and the details that matter are shade over part of it, a shallow end that is genuinely shallow, and water temperature, which in the green season is warm enough that small children can stay in for hours. Beyond the house, Thailand has several large purpose built water parks, including one on the Hua Hin coast and one on Phuket, both of which are modern, well run and busy. For a family that wants privacy, the practical approach is to go at opening time on a weekday, take a private cabana, and leave by early afternoon, or in some cases to ask about a group booking arrangement outside peak hours.

Swimming lessons are the underrated item. Female instructors are available in Phuket, Samui and Bangkok and can come to the villa, which suits families who would rather their daughters learned somewhere other than a public pool. A month of near daily lessons turns a nervous seven year old into a swimmer, and it is the single thing parents thank us for most often at the end of a long stay. Book the instructor for the whole stay in advance rather than week by week; the good ones are fully committed through the summer.

Islands and boats

A chartered boat is the best day out available to a family with children in Thailand, and it is the one arrangement that satisfies every age band at once. Small children get shallow water and sand; older children get snorkelling, kayaks and a rope swing off the back of the boat; teenagers get to be somewhere other than the house; and the mothers and grandmothers get a private deck with shade. We charter the whole vessel, brief the crew, load halal catering from a certified supplier in port, and leave early enough to have a cove to ourselves before the day fleet arrives.

For children over ten, a diving course is worth considering as a structured project rather than a day out. Recognised international certification, such as the PADI open water course, runs over three or four days with a mix of pool and open water sessions, and dive schools across Phuket, Krabi and Samui teach it constantly. Private instruction with a single instructor for your children alone is available and is what we book, both for privacy and because the pace can follow the child. Female instructors exist and should be asked for by name and well ahead.

Muay Thai, and other things that are actually taught

Muay Thai has become one of the most requested activities for boys and, increasingly, girls from Gulf families, and Thailand is obviously the place to learn it. The training camps range from serious professional gyms to resort fitness studios, and for a family the right choice is usually a private trainer at the villa or a private session at a gym rather than a group class. Two or three sessions a week for a month produces visible progress, keeps a teenager occupied and tired, and gives the trip a purpose beyond the pool. Ask for a trainer who teaches children specifically, because the pedagogy is different and the good children's coaches are known.

Beyond that, the activities that hold up over a long stay are the ones with an instructor and a curve: sailing and paddleboarding on the calmer Gulf side, tennis at the resorts with courts, cooking lessons that a teenage daughter can actually use at home, Thai language basics for a child who finds it funny, photography walks in Bangkok with a guide. What does not hold up is the elephant camp, the tiger attraction and the crocodile show, all of which raise welfare concerns we would rather families simply avoided, and none of which a child remembers by the end of the week.

Teenagers and safe independence

This is the question we are asked most and answered least honestly by other people. Thailand is, in the areas these families stay, a low crime environment where teenagers are not at meaningful risk of violence, and the tourist areas are well policed and well lit. The genuine risks are different: motorbikes, which we would not allow under any circumstances and which are the single largest cause of serious injury to young visitors; water, particularly rip currents on the Andaman coast in the green season when the red flags mean exactly what they say; and the fact that the nightlife districts of Patong and parts of Bangkok are simply not places for a sixteen year old to wander, whatever their confidence.

The workable arrangement is bounded independence. A defined area, usually the resort or estate itself plus a specific mall, in which the teenager moves freely. A car and a known driver on call rather than a chaperone, so that going somewhere requires a message rather than a negotiation. A curfew that is agreed at the start of the stay rather than argued about nightly. And a discreet coordinator who knows where the group is without following it. Sixteen year olds accept these terms readily when they are set out once, clearly, at the beginning, and resent them enormously when they are improvised in week two.

Phones, data and staying reachable

The address card in Thai is the least modern item on that list and the most useful. Thai addresses are difficult to convey in English over the phone, and a lost eleven year old who can hand a card to any shopkeeper is home in twenty minutes.

Girls, and the arrangements that suit them

Daughters in the eleven to eighteen band are the group whose preferences are most often planned around rather than asked about. In practice what they want is the same as what their brothers want, with the addition of settings where they are not observed: the pool at an hour when it is theirs, the gym or tennis court booked in their name, a spa afternoon with female therapists, a salon floor closed for an appointment, a shopping appointment at a mall boutique rather than a wander through a crowded one. Every one of those is a booking our office makes routinely, and the whole difference between a good month and a dull one for a seventeen year old is whether anybody thought to make them.

Activity providers, dive schools and swimming instructors vary widely in standards. Verify instructor certification directly with the recognised training organisation, confirm insurance and supervision arrangements with the provider in writing, and confirm current water safety conditions with the resort or the local beach patrol before children swim in the green season.
