The landscape
Bangkok supports full veterinary hospitals with 24-hour emergency cover, surgical theatres, imaging including CT, and specialist services from cardiology to oncology, with the university hospitals at Chulalongkorn and Kasetsart anchoring the referral tier. Phuket's depth is thinner but genuinely sufficient, with several hospital-grade practices serving the west-coast communities. English-speaking vets are standard at the practices expatriates use, and the culture is appointment-light: same-day access is normal, which Western pet owners take a while to stop being surprised by.

Pet insurance exists locally but thin coverage and low ceilings make it marginal; at these price levels most families sensibly self-insure and simply fund care as it comes.
The tropical disease set
The genuine adjustment is preventive. Thailand's climate sustains parasite pressure year-round: heartworm is endemic and monthly prevention is non-negotiable for dogs; tick-borne blood parasites, ehrlichia and babesia foremost, are the region's signature threats and make tick prevention a daily discipline rather than a summer habit; and rabies remains present in the environment, which keeps vaccination current and street-dog contact managed. None of this is alarming with a protocol in place; all of it is why the first appointment after arrival should establish one.
Living well: the practical notes
- Register with a hospital-grade practice, not only a neighbourhood clinic, so the emergency pathway exists before it is needed.
- Keep the vaccination book and chip records meticulously current: they are the passport for boarding, moves and any future travel.
- Heat discipline is welfare: dawn and dusk exercise, never a parked car, and grooming adapted to the climate.
- Premium foods and familiar medications are available at import prices; a good vet maps regimes onto local equivalents where it is sensible.
- Boarding and day-care at serious standards exist in both cities; the best fill over holidays, book like the hotels they are.
When you travel
Thailand's export process mirrors the import one, health certificate, DLD export permit, destination rules, and the families who kept titres and vaccinations current find it a fortnight's paperwork rather than a project.
